Unpopular opinion: Ronald Reagan played a massive part in black history in the last 40 years, mainly in changing the course of that mothafucka. His harmful, recklessly irresponsible, and dehumanizing policies that targeted black folks thru his continuation of the war on drugs sparked by Nixon— found us making lemonade out of fucking lemons.
Although many of our aunties, uncles, cousins, brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers were locked up as a result of an actor literally playing the role of “leader of the free world,” we found a way to start/maintain businesses, provide for our families, and create some bomb-ass art and music that blossomed from a fucked-up scenario that none of our peoples planned for.
straight up, this candle symbolized a chance to reclaim the narrative of our history and spirit through the burning of a symbol of oppression that a lot of us and our families rose from.
Ronald Reagan is a big part of black history. While in office he declared war on drugs during the 1980’s crack epidemic. Reagan declared “a war on drugs” on October 14, 1982. While the concept was good, this act would tear apart a lot of black families. The media frenzy surrounding the crack epidemic caused the prison population to soar and cops to target black people in the hood and lock them up even though black people were using drugs at the same rate as whites. It was said that the Reagan administration was responsible for the crack flood in urban neighborhoods, letting it get out of control and then putting in place and law and order system to control drug use.
